ToggleWhat is an Article?
In the English Grammar there are THREE Articles. Without the proper use of Articles, we can not create meaningful sentences. It is very important to study the Articles to know the formation of any sentence in English Grammar. An article is a small word that comes before a noun (name of a person, place, animal, or thing).
Articles help us understand which noun we are talking about.

Types of Articles
Articles are of two types:
Indefinite Articles – A, An
Definite Article – The
1. Indefinite Articles – A and An
In the grammar, we use A and An when we talk about any one person or thing, not a specific one.
Use of A
Use A before words that begin with a consonant sound.
Examples:
a boy
a pen
a dog
a school
👉 Remember: It is the sound, not the spelling, that matters.
Use of An
Use An before words that begin with a vowel sound
(Vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u)
Examples:
an apple
an egg
an umbrella
an hour
👉 “Hour” starts with a silent “h”, so it has a vowel sound.

| Sound | Article |
